Crowd Management and COVID-19 Series: Part 1

By Charity Kilbourn – Sr. Content Leader, ACTN Strategies LLC

With public venues reopening, crowd management has become more important than ever. Putting systems in place that will help reduce the spread of COVID-19 should be everybody’s top priority. Here are a few things to consider.

Limiting Attendance

The nationwide shutdown created unprecedented financial strain for many businesses and organizations. While it may seem like the most logical thing, opening at full capacity is actually counterproductive. Increased spread of COVID-19 can force another shutdown and the costs associated with reopening may be incurred multiple times. Instead, consider limiting attendance. This will ensure there is an influx of money while helping to keep everyone safe and the reopening of the country moving steadily forward.

Staggering Access

Staggering access helps to ensure social distancing protocols are followed by guests and employees. While this may not work for every venue, it can be highly effective for places like museums, zoos, theme parks, etc.

Signage and Hygiene Promotion

It may seem silly to have to put up signs reminding people to social distance, but the reality is, unless it is front of mind, it can be quite easy to forget about the current situation. The best way to ensure that frequent hand washing and social distancing remain front of mind is an abundance of reminders. Signage and hand sanitizing stations are a great way to do this. The Center for Disease Control recommends placing signs in highly visible areas in multiple languages and formats.

We are all in this together. Everything we do today to limit the spread of COVID-19 helps to save more lives tomorrow.

COVID-19 has changed the way we look at everything and crowd management is no different. Stay tuned for the next installment of our Crowd Management and COVID-19 Series.
