Washing your hands, wearing a mask, and social distancing are, of course, the first line of defense when it comes to reducing the likelihood of contracting COVID-19. However, there are other things we can do as individuals to bolster our health and give our bodies the best chance of fighting off the virus.

The shutdown of much of the country has changed how we conduct our lives day-to-day. Maybe you are now be working from home and moving around less in general. Maybe you are still working outside the home but the gym you usually frequent is closed. Whatever the case may be, don’t let it turn into a reason to become, or even remain, sedentary. The Center for Disease Control says obesity puts individuals at a higher risk of becoming seriously ill from Covid-19. So, get creative with exercise. Find a workout video online, use whatever you have laying around the house for weights, or just turn the music up loud and boogie down.

Eat Healthy

The World Health Organization has stated that “Good nutrition is crucial for health, particularly in times when the immune system might need to fight back.” While it can be a bit more difficult to get fresh produce, try to incorporate as much of it into your diet as possible. If you can’t get to the store, consider giving produce delivery a try. Many farms and businesses have increased delivery of produce during the pandemic. You can also incorporate more whole grains and lentils into you diet. They are usually dried or canned so the have an amazing shelf life and they are a great source of nutrients, protein, and fiber.

Focus on Mental Wellness

If you are not paying attention to your mental wellbeing, the current situation can quickly become overwhelming. While it is important to stay informed and up to date on the latest information, be sure to take time away from the news and social media to focus on yourself. Read a book, start a journal, build a model airplane. Anything that helps you reduce stress and focus on your emotional health.
